Easy & Healthy Indian Breakfasts

When you wake up in the morning, do you think of food or more sleep? You must be aware that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It helps you to stay focused, happy and energetic throughout the day. It even controls your appetite. Regardless of being the most important meal of the day most of the people skip their breakfast.

Today, I’m going to list seven healthy Indian breakfasts which are less time consuming and so you can afford to have your breakfast even when your running late for your work. One for each day.

1. Idli Upma

Idli and upmas are one of the most famous South-Indian dishes. This dish is for the kids who are running late for their schools and have less time for their breakfast. The leftover idlis are not really appreciated as they turn dry with time and so why not try something new with them which is both healthy, tasty and less time consuming. This is one of the best finger food for the kids.

Recipe

  1. Crumble the leftover idlis in a bowl.
  2. Add oil in a pan and heat it. Add mustard seeds to it.
  3. Once the seeds start to crack add channa daal and urad daal to it.
  4. Roast it till they turn golden-brown.
  5. Add curry leaves to it.
  6. Add onions, chopped carrots and green chilli to it.
  7. Add salt and turmeric powder.
  8. Sauté it just before it starts turning brown.
  9. Add the crumbled idlis to it.
  10. Add a little water to prevent it to dry.
  11. Serve this dish hot to the kids.

2. Vegetable Dalia

Vegetable Dalia is an Indian superfood for weight loss due to its dietary fiber content. It is the Indian version of the new-“in”s food of India, oats. This is great for winter mornings when you need something warm to begin your cozy mornings with.

Recipe

  1. Put few drops of oil or ghee in the pressure cooker. Heat it.
  2. Add cumin seeds to it.
  3. Once the cumin seeds start to crack, add chopped onions and sauté it till they turn transparent.
  4. Add green chilli and ginger garlic paste to it.
  5. Add tomato and other green veggies and sauté it for a while.
  6. Rinse the Dalia and add it to the mixture.
  7. Add 4-cups of water and add salt accordingly.
  8. Stir it well.
  9. Pressure cook until you get 10-12 whistles.
  10. Garnish it with coriander leaves.
  11. Serve this dish hot.

3. Thepla

Thepla is one of the most famous Gujrati dish. It is not considered a healthy option but it indeed is a really healthy food. The ingredients include wheat flour, fenugreek leaves, coriander leaves and turmeric powder. All these ingredients are used in any other healthy food so indeed Thepla is a healthy breakfast option.

Recipe

  1. In a bowl, mix wheat flour, gram flour, dried fenugreek, ginger and fresh fenugreek.
  2. Add curd and water to it. Mix it well to convert it into a soft dough.
  3. Prepare small balls from the dough and roll them just like the way you do it with chapattis.
  4. Grease the pan and put the uncooked Thepla on it.
  5. Cook it from both sides by adding 1-2 drops of oil.
  6. Cook until it turns golden brown.
  7. Serve it with pickle and a cup of tea or coffee.

4. Poha

It is an everyday food of Maharashtrians. It is liked both by adults as well as children. It is convenient, easy to make and requires everyday ingredients.

Recipe

  1. Rinse the Poha in water until they soften.
  2. Chop onions, green chillies, capsicum and tomatoes.
  3. Heat the oil in the non-stick pan and add mustard seeds to it.
  4. When the seeds crack, add curry leaves to it.
  5. Add onions and green chillies to it and sauté them for about two minutes.
  6. Then add capsicum to it and sauté them for about two minutes.
  7. Add tomatoes and turmeric powder to it and sauté it for about two minutes.
  8. Now add poha, salt and garam masala to it. Cook it well for about 2 minutes.
  9. Switch off the flame and add lemon juice to it.
  10. You can add some namkeen and peanuts to it as well.

5. Multigrain Paranthas

Parathas are one of the most famous dishes of Punjab. Multi-grained parantha is a great dish to have in breakfast if you wish to be healthy. These paranthas are loaded with fiber, vitamins, proteins and carbs.

Recipe

  1. Take equal quantity of all kind of flours. Add some salt to it.
  2. Add water and mix it well to turn it into a smooth dough.
  3. Cover the dough with a bowl and set aside the dough for about 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare small balls from the dough and roll them just like the way you do it with chapattis.
  5. Grease the pan and put the uncooked parantha on it.
  6. Cook it from both sides by adding few drops of ghee.
  7. Cook until it turns golden brown.
  8. Serve the parathas hot with curd. You can even have lassi along with that.

6. Jolpan

It is one of the most popular breakfast dish in East-India. This dish do not require any cooking. It consists of various forms of rice and they are soaked and mixed together.

Recipe

  1. Wash and soak the rice in water for 2-3 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, spread the beaten rice, puffed riced and various other variety of glutinous rice found in Assam.
  3. Add yogurt to it.
  4. Mix well.
  5. And your breakfast is ready. Serve and Enjoy!

Dal Paratha

This is not only famous in East-India but many other regions as well. It is flatbread stuffed with lentils (Bengal Daal).

Recipe

  1. Wash and soak chana daal for 2-3 hours.
  2. Add salt and turmeric to it.
  3. Add 2 cups of water to it and cover it with a lid.
  4. Simmer it till the daal turns soft.
  5. Meanwhile, mix wheat flour, oil, salt, and baking soda and cumin seeds. Add water to it and mix it well to turn into a stiff dough.
  6. Cover the dough with a bowl for 30 minutes.
  7. Prepare small balls from the dough and roll them just like the way you do it with chapattis.
  8. Fill it with 1.5 tablespoon of filling (daal).
  9. Bring together all the sides in the centre and seal tightly.
  10. Roll it to form a chapatti.
  11. Grease the pan and put the uncooked Thepla on it.
  12. Cook it from both sides by adding 1-2 drops of oil.
  13. Cook until it turns golden brown.
  14. Enjoy it with salad and yogurt.
